tonight will be the 22 year olds Phil Kessel’s first NHL game since injuring his shoulder!

as well it will be the first game he will be a LEAF. Can he be what the team to create a consistent offensive presence?

I question that, as a leaf fan I hope so, but is he game ready and has he tested his shoulder with real contact?

I have a hard believing that considering he is almost a month ahead of schedule in his return. If he is ready then the Leafs will have a definite weapon added to the power play and a player who knows the net well while 5 on 5….

Although the problems have been the defense with the Leafs I still have a hard time believing he will be the answer, which is disheartening considering the price tag on getting him…we shall see what happens against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight at the ACC!

NHL roundup: Sunday’s action on the ice

(CP) – 13 hours ago

The Washington Capitals lost superstar Alex Ovechkin on Sunday, and then they lost the game.

Raffi Torres scored his second goal of the third period with 23 seconds left and R.J. Umberger got his second of the game 1:45 into overtime as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat Washington 5-4.

“He stepped up for sure,” the Blue Jackets’ Rick Nash said of Torres. “That first one was huge. Good battle down low, good wrap-around.”

Ovechkin left the game with an injury in the second period, but his teammates tried to use his absence for motivation in the third period.

“It was kind of a rallying cry,” said Quintin Laing, who scored his first goal of the season in the third. “We wanted to prove this team isn’t about one guy, it’s about a team, and we wanted to show people we can come back.”

Columbus led 2-1 going into the final period, but fell behind after Brooks Laich scored twice in a span of 2:08 midway through the third. Torres answered Laich’s two goals by tying the game 3-3 with a wraparound at 13:36.

Laing regained the lead for Washington with 3:26 left in the third, but Torres tied it again in the final minute.

“I thought we played a pretty good third,” Capitals centre Brendan Morrison said. “We rallied and did a lot of good things offensively, and then we just go and shoot ourselves in the foot. It is frustrating because it was a game we should have won.”

Elsewhere in the NHL it was: N.Y. Rangers 1 Boston 0; San Jose 5 Carolina 1; and Vancouver 3 Colorado 0.

At Washington, Ovechkin was involved in a shoving match in front of the Blue Jackets bench barely a minute into the second period. A few minutes later, the Russian got tangled up with Torres and fell to the ice. After he got up, he grimaced and gingerly skated off the ice, heading straight to the locker-room.

After the game, Ovechkin declined to comment on the nature of the injury, other than calling it “upper body.”

“I can’t tell you how I got hurt,” he said. “It’s day-to-day.”

Nash scored the Blue Jackets’ first goal at the five-minute mark of the second period. He sped past defenceman Mike Green and then put a move on goalie Jose Theodore for his seventh goal in seven career games against Washington.

Nash also had two assists. He set up Umberger’s overtime winner, and had a hand in a fluke play that led to Umberger’s first.

On a power play, Nash dumped the puck into the Capitals zone down the right side. As Theodore went behind the net to play the puck, it took a strange bounce off the boards and ended up in front of the goal, where Umberger put it into the empty net.

“It’s a big win, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Nash said. “When we play on the road, we can’t be taking too many penalties. We made some defensive errors when the game was tied. Just got to sharpen up those areas.”

Ovechkin missed all of the late action after leaving the game at the 6:10 mark of the second period, but he was in the middle of things as the second period started.

During a break in play barely a minute into the period, Ovechkin was bumped by Jason Chimera. Ovechkin responded with a shove and players from both teams skated over to the scrum. Ovechkin, Chimera and the Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll all received minors for roughing, and Boll was also issued a misconduct.

Ovechkin downplayed the incident afterward.

“It was just a moment of the game,” Ovechkin said. “Nothing happened. He just hit me, I hit him, there was a little battle there, nothing happened.”

Chimera said the scuffle was a result of a hard hit by Ovechkin earlier in the game.

“He kind of (threw) a punch at me, and then Boller kind of got into it and it was a mess. I hope he’s all right,” Chimera said. “There was no intent to hurt somebody out there. He just hit me pretty hard that one shift, so I just let him know ‘You’re not going to hit me like that all game,’ so I pushed him a bit, he punched me back in the face, and a couple shifts later he’s off the ice, so I hope he’s all right.”

Canucks 3 Avalanche 0

At Vancouver, Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler each had a goal and an assist, and Andrew Raycroft made 18 saves to lead the Canucks over Colorado.

Tanner Glass rounded out the scoring midway through the third period as the Canucks won for the sixth time in their last seven home games.

Craig Anderson made 17 saves as the Western Conference-leading Avalanche lost consecutive games in regulation for the first time this season.

Rangers 1 Bruins 0

At New York, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots for his 150th NHL victory and 21st career shutout, while Marian Gaborik returned from injury and scored for the fourth straight game.

The Rangers returned home from a disappointing road trip in which they went 0-2 without Gaborik, beating the stingy Bruins.

Sharks 5 Hurricanes 1

At Raleigh, N.C., Kent Huskins and Brad Staubitz scored 1:22 apart in the second period and Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves as San Jose won its fifth straight.

Douglas Murray, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Patrick Marleau also scored for the Pacific Division-leading Sharks. San Jose got three goals from defencemen in their first win in Carolina since Oct. 24, 2000.

When Brett Favre entered the stadium at Lambeau Field he was greeted with jeers and boos. Even though he said he was saddened of that welcome, it didn’t affect his performance to lead the Minnesota Vikings to a 38-26 win over the Packers.

The packers since Favre left haven’t been able to pull out those hard wins which were common occurrence off the arm of Brett Favre. And now the Packers have a schedule were they are mainly facing teams with winning records.

Maybe the fans realized this or rather realized that they were able to see yet another Favre win and started to cheer his win for the former GB Pack American boy! Because come the end of the game they gave Favre a raucous cheer that paled to the jeers to which he entered the game to.
These cheers represented all the years he gave them and the Super Bowls which he provided off his arm. You may hate he’s gone but you can never hate the man who played the way Brett Favre can!

Ted Ginn Jr. looked into the camera on the sideline after his first kickoff return for a touchdown Sunday and put his finger up to his lips, as if to say, “Shush.” Seven minutes later, the Dolphins’ speedster really left the Jets speechless when he scored on another kickoff return.

Ginn became the first player in NFL history to score two kickoff-return touchdowns of 100 or more yards in the same game, the deciding factor in the Dolphins’ 30-25 win at the Meadowlands. He’s the first player to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in the same quarter since 1967.

Ginn’s runs provided a last word for the verbal skirmishes between the Dolphins and Jets this season, but certainly had Jets fans wondering why Gang Green continued kicking to him.

“We wanted to kick it in the middle and corral him,” kicker Jay Feely said. “We had opportunities, we just didn’t make the play.”

Ginn’s first touchdown return, a 100-yard dash, came off a kick that was misplaced and low, by Feely’s own account. Ginn, a wide receiver who lost his starting spot after dropping several passes in Miami‘s loss to the Saints last week, cut to his left and then broke for the right sideline, scoring with 10:24 to go in the third quarter.

“We had lost leverage on the first one when he was out on the edge,” linebacker Larry Izzo said. “On the second one, we had six or seven guys, including myself, to get him down and we didn’t get it done there.”

The second return was a master class in making something out of nothing. Ginn stopped at the 15-yard line, where blockers and would-be tacklers formed a wall. He danced past grabs by Izzo and Ryan Fowler and waited for an opening.

“I felt like I was trapped, you know, and I just tried to use my feet and play off my blocks,” Ginn said of the 101-yard return. “My motive was to get to the outside, and once I got that opening, I turn on those burners and I’m gone.”

The Jets had last given up a touchdown on a kickoff return in 2007. During special teams coach Mike Westhoff‘s nine-year tenure, the Jets had given up three before Sunday.

While the decision to kick the ball deep in Ginn’s territory two more times was Westhoff’s, Rex Ryan said he would not second-guess his special teams coach.

“I’ve got the best special teams coach in the league,” Ryan said. “I will go to the grave, so to speak, defending what he says. I truly believe in him. If he says it’s best to kick it deep, I trust him.”

Week 8 NFL Odds Written October 29, 2009 by Rock Henderson Denver at Baltimore is a key game for both squads. The Ravens bye week could not have came at a better time after losing three in a row. Denver is coming off their own bye week after a huge win at division rival San Diego. Ray Lewis and company are going to come out with guns blazin’ against the undefeated Broncos. Baltimore is listed as a 3 point favorite with a total set at 42. The Houston Texan offense is firing on all cylinders. Buffalo is coming off two straight wins behind QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. If Houston wants to be a playoff team, they have to beat teams like the Bills. The Texans are 7-3 ATS in their last ten game against the AFC. Look for Matt Schaub to pick apart a depleted Bills secondary. Houston is 3.5 point favorite and the o/u is set at 41.5 Bears head coach Lovie Smith is feeling the heat in Chicago after a 3-3 start. They get good news this weekend though when the 1-6 Cleveland Browns come to town. QB Jay Cutler has to cut down on the interceptions and the Bears need to rejuvenate their running game. Chicago is a 13.5 point favorite and the total is set at 40 points according to our most recent NFL betting odds. Tony Romo is back in the good graces of Dallas fans after an impressive performance in a win over Atlanta. The Boys will look to make it two in a row when Hasselbeck and the Seahawks travel to the big D. Dallas will be extremely tough to beat if they keep getting superb play out of little known WR Miles Austin. Seattle has some issues that need to be addressed. The Seahawks are getting 9.5 with a total set at 46 points. The Colts will look to make it seven straight against the fading San Francisco 49ers. Peyton Manning is playing at an MVP level and Indy’s defense has been stout. Considered a bust as the #1 draft pick of the 49ers that has seen little playing time, QB Alex Smith has a chance to prove doubters wrong. The 49ers need to get Frank Gore on track early in this one. The Colts are 12.5 favorites and the point total is set at 43.5. If you bet on college football there’s simply no reason not to take advantage of the $500 match bonus at BetUS. Miami better strap the helmets real tight on Sunday when they take on the New York Jets in the Meadowlands. It has only been a few weeks since the Dolphins shocked the Jets at home with their Wildcat attack. Don’t think head coach Rex Ryan doesn’t have something up his sleeve for the unique running game. The Jets are favored by a field goal with the o/u at 40.5 The G-men have suddenly lost two in a row and look vulnerable for the first time this season. Philly put a beatdown on the Redskins Monday night and know how important this game is for their playoff hopes. Injuries could finally be catching up with the Giants. The Eagles have to keep finding ways to get the ball to explosive wideout Desean Jackson. This game is a pick em’ with the total set at 44. Brett Favre’s return to Green Bay should be a showcase to say the least. The Vikings won the first match-up this season behind a vintage Favre performance, but the Packers have been on a roll since and QB Aaron Rodgers was just named NFC player of the month. Emotions should be high on Sunday afternoon. Green Bay is a 3 point favorite with the total set at 47.5

Yankee impact? World Series ratings up 29 percent from ’08 By ‘Duk The early ratings are in and you might be able to expect a little more blatant Yankee boosterism from Fox tonight. After a five-year period of slumping numbers, the amount of American televisions tuned into the World Series soared on Wednesday. I would surmise that news obviously put network execs in the position of hoping this matchup between two teams with huge fanbases will turn into an extended series and not end with a quick Phillies sweep. From the Associated Press: “Game 1 on Wednesday earned an 11.9 fast national rating and 19 share. That’s up 29 percent from the opener last year, when the Phillies-Rays series drew record-low ratings. “Fox said Thursday it’s the second-best Game 1 rating this decade, trailing only Red Sox-Cardinals in 2004. It’s also the best rating for a non-decisive World Series matchup since Game 3 that year.” It’s funny. Everyone outside of New York and Boston pitches fits over how no one wants to watch the Yankees and Red Sox that much and yet the only recent World Series to post any great numbers have involved both those teams. Of course, it also raises an interesting debate. Are the numbers that way because those are the only two teams anyone wants to watch? Or has ESPN and FOX conditioned the American public — the people who don’t consume baseball actively during the regular season — into believing that those are the only two teams worth tuning in for? I’d say it’s a little of both. http://celebritiestore.com/
